452 NEGROES. [ART. 66.

paid under this section for taking up any slave in the county in
which the said slave is hired, or in which his owner resides.

10. In all cases where a runaway slave from this State shall
be apprehended within the limits of a free State, the sum allowed
for taking up and securing such runaway slave shall be one
hundred dollars, or one-half the value of such slave arrested, at
the option of the owner; which, however, shall not apply to the
counties of this State bordering on the Pennsylvania line; but
where a larger sum is offered as a reward for taking a runaway
slave, no further sum is to be paid.

11. If any runaway slave shall resist the person who attempts
to arrest him, and such slave happens to be slain for refusing to
surrender himself, such killing shall be deemed justifiable; and
any slave so killed shall be paid for by the State, his value to be
ascertained by two impartial and reputable men not of kin to
the owner, who shall be appointed by a justice of the peace, and
sworn to value such slave at his fair value, and who shall certify
their valuation to such justice, who shall certify such valuation,
oath and appointment, to the Comptroller, who shall thereupon
issue his warrant to the Treasurer to pay the same.

HARBORING, ENTICING AWAY AND AIDING THE ESCAPE OF SLAVES.

12. If any person shall entice, transport, or secretly carry or
send away out of this State, any slave belonging to any inhabit-
ant of this State, he shall forfeit and pay to the owner of such
slave treble damages and costs, to be recovered by action of
debt in the Circuit Court for the county where such person so
offending resides.

13. No master of a vessel coming into this State, shall suffer
any slave to frequent his vessel, or come on board, or conceal
such slave on board his vessel for the space of an hour; and any
person so offending, shall pay three dollars per hour for every
hour he shall suffer such slave to frequent his vessel, to the
owner of such slave—to be recovered before a justice of the
peace.

14. If any person shall knowingly entertain any slave unlaw-
fully absenting himself from his owner or overseer, he shall
forfeit and pay at the rate of two dollars per hour for every
hour he shall entertain such slave or shall suffer him to be about
