29. Every constable shall upon complaint, enter into the house
of any retailer, and there call for and inspect the measures used
by such retailer.
30. He shall disperse and suppress tumultuous meetings of
negroes or slaves, and shall, upon the production of the cer-
tificate of two respectable freeholders of his district or'ward, of
his industry and fidelity in the discharge of the duty imposed by
this section, be entitled to the sum of eight dollars, to be levied
and paid by the county commissioners or mayor and city council
of Baltimore.
81. He shall repair, once a month or oftener, upon informa-
tion, to all suspected places of such meetings within his district
or ward, and may summon any person to aid him in suppressing
such meetings.
32. He shall disperse all assemblages of negroes whose pro-
ceedings and objects are not public, and arrest such negroes as
shall be found in such assemblages and carry them before some
justice of the peace, so that they may be committed to answer
for a violation of the law prohibiting such assemblages; and any
constable failing so to do shall be subject to a fine of not less
than one hundred dollars.
33. He may, to enable him to perform his duty under the pre-
ceding section, summon to his aid such citizens in his vicinity as
he may think necessary, and any person refusing to obey such
summons may be indicted, and on conviction, shall be fined not
more than one hundred dollars nor less than twenty dollars.
34. Every constable shall deliver to the sheriff at the jail any
person who may be committed to his custody for that purpose by
a justice of the peace or other officer having the power to commit.
