And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from and after the date of its passage.

Approved March 30, 1868.

 

CHAPTER 340.

AN ACT to incorporate the Maryland and South-
ern Immigration Society.

Incorporation

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That Ezra Whitman, Charles E.
Wethered, Charles J. Baker, Augustine I. Smith,
Arthur F. Robertson, Solomon G. Hand, Jonathan
M. Bennett, Joseph H. Wilson, Alexander R. Bote-
ler, Philip D. Sutton, and such other persons as
may hereafter be associated with them and their
successors and assigns, be and they are hereby cre-
ated a body politic and corporate, under the name
and style of the Maryland and Southern Immigra-
tion Society, for the purpose of encouraging and
aiding Immigration, and providing for the loca-
tion and settlement of immigrants ; and by that
name shall be capable in law of purchasing, hold-
ing, using, selling, leasing and conveying proper-
ty, real, personal and mixed, as far as may be ne-
cessary for the purpose above mentioned, and shall
have perpetual succession, and by their corporate
name may sue and be sued, and may have a com-
mon seal, and the same to alter and renew at their
pleasure, and shall have and enjoy and exercise
all tha rights, powers and privileges, incident and
necessary to effectuate the purposes of said corpo-
ration as created by this Act.

Fill vacancies.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the persons
named as corporators in the first Section of this
Act, and such persons as they may select to fill any
vacancies occasioned in their number by the death,
resignation or declension to act, they or any of the
above named are hereby empowered to organize
the said society, and they are hereby constituted a
