GATE AND DOOR-KEEPER TO THE COURT.

trot lines, or in any other manner, except with the angling
rod, during the term of three years, to commence from the first
day of March next, and from the first day of March to the fif-
teenth day of June in each and every year thereafter, such
person so offending shall forfeit and pay for each offence, and
for every month a fish pot is suffered to remain, the sum often
dollars, to be recovered by action of debt in the name of the
levy court of Washington county, before a justice of the peace,
one-half to the informer, the other half to the school fund of
Washington county.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted. That if any slave shall whip and
beat the water in said Antietam creek, or its tributary streams,
as far up as the first mill-dams, for the purposes aforesaid, or
shall fish or erect any fish pot or other thing for the purposes
aforesaid, shall be punished for every such offence, on convic-
tion thereof, before any justice of the peace, by the oath of one
or more witnesses, by whipping on his bare back, in the discre-
tion of said justice, not exceeding for each offence the number

of ten lashes ; Provided always, that the master or mistress of
said slave, or any other person may redeem said slave so con-
victed, from said punishment, by the payment often dollars for
the uses aforesaid ; And provided also, that if such slave
shall act as aforesaid, by the order of his or her owner or
employer, he or she shall not be subject to such whipping, but
the owner or employer giving such order, shall be subject to
the penalty of ten dollars to be recovered as aforesaid.

Provisos.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That every justice of the peace,
shall at the levy court of his county annually, account for all
fines received by virtue of this act, under the penalty of twenty
dollars for each fine by him imposed or received.

GATE AND DOOR-KEEPER TO THE COURT.
AN ACT for the benefit of the Gate or Door-keepers within the bar of the
Court-house, in Frederick and Washington Counties.— 1838, ch. 232.

Account.

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the keepers of the gates or doors within, the bar of the court-
house, in Frederick and Washington counties, be, and they
are hereby respectively entitled to the sum of one dollar and
fifty cents per day, for their services as keepers of said gates,
or doors, and that upon a certificate from the clerk of said
county, of the number of days that each of them attended,
the collector of taxes for said county, is hereby ordered and
directed to pay over upon presentation of such certificate or
certificates, the amount thereof, in the same manner that the
jurors of said county are now paid.
