SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That whenever the profits aris-
ing from the silk culture, as aforesaid, shall be more than suf-
ficient to defray the expenses thereof, such surplus shall be
applied towards defraying the general expenses of the institu-
tion herein before mentioned.

REGISTER.
AN ACT to compel the Registers of Wills in the several Counties herein
mentioned to keep each his Office at the Seat of Justice in the County
for which he shall be Register.— 1804, ch. 39

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That from and after the passage of this act, it shall be, and is
hereby declared to be, the duty of the registers of wills for the
time being of the several counties herein mentioned, to wit:
Saint-Mary's, Kent, Charles, Talbot, Dorchester, Worcester,
Ilarford, Washington and Montgomery counties, to keep each
his office at the place where the county court is held for his
respective county, and there to deposite and keep all the pa-
pers belonging to his said office.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall also be the duty of
the said registers to give daily attendance at their offices, either
in person or by deputy, for the purpose of discharging the
duties incident thereto, except on Sundays, and unless pre-
vented by sickness, or some unavoidable accident.

SEC. 3. Provided nevertheless, and be it enacted, That no-
thing herein contained shall be construed, or have effect in any
manner, to authorize a deputy to transact any part of the busi-
ness 6r duties of the said office which is or may by law be re-
quired to be executed by the register in person, and it is
hereby declared to be the duty of the said registers, at all
times after the passage of this act, to attend at their respective
offices, in person, unless prevented as aforesaid, at least two
days in every week.

RETAILERS.
A SUPPLEMENT to an ACT, entitled, an Act for the better protection ot
Slaveholders in the several Counties therein mentioned. — 1818, ch. 184.

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That from and after the first day of May next, it shall not be
lawful for any licensed retailer or retailers in Prince George's
Somerset, Dorchester, Charles and Talbot counties, or for any
person or persons residing in either of said counties, accus-
tomed to make and sell distilled spirits, or other liquors, to sell
such distilled spirits, or other liquors, to any free negro or
mulatto, or to any negro or mulatto servant or slave, between
