POOR.

WOT

court, to which cognizance of the same is hereby given, shall
be sentenced to work and labour under the direction of 'The
Trustees for the Poor of Baltimore City and County' aforesaid,
for a period of time, in the discretion of the said court, not ex-
ceeding twelve months ; and a certificate under the corporate
seal of the said trustees, that any person has so departed/ in-
debted and without permission, shall be sufficient evidence to
authorize any judge or justice of the peace to issue a warrant
for the arrest of such person, and to bind over or commit such
person for trial before the proper court, as in other cases of

 

misdemeanor : Provided, that nothing herein contained shall
be construed to prevent or restrict the said trustees from dis-
missing any pauper or other person from under their care,
without requiring any compensation to be made by labour, or
otherwise, for the expenses charged against such person.

Proviso.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That the said trustees shall have
full power, and they are hereby authorized, whenever they
shall deem it advisable and beneficial to Baltimore city and
county, to sell and dispose of all or any part of the ground or
land within the city of Baltimore vested in them by this act
and also all or any part of the farm called Calverton, lately
purchased for the use of the poor of said county, which lies on
the east side of Gwinn's run, and upon receipt of the purchase
money to convey the same to the purchasers, and apply the
proceeds of such sale or sales to the payment of the expenses
incurred or which shall be incurred in erecting and com-
pleting the buildings and other improvements necessary for
the accommodation and employment of the paupers, vagrants
and other persons who shall be under the care, charge, or
direction of the said trustees; and if more than sufficient to
pay such expenses, to apply the residue to the payment of the
debt incurred by the purchase of the aforesaid farm called Cal-
verton ; and, until by such sale or otherwise the means of
paying the said debt shall be obtained, the said trustees shall
include in the amount to be annually levied for the use, sup-
port and employment of the poor of Baltimore city and county,
such sum in addition to all other charges and expenses as will
be sufficient to pay the interest accruing on the said debt, which
interest shall be levied in equal proportions on the said city
and county.

Empowered
to sell.

SEC. 7, And be it enacted, That every clause, provision or
section of any act, heretofore made inconsistent with the pro-
visions of this act, or repugnant thereto, be, and the same
is hereby repealed.

Repeal.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That nothing herein contained
shall be construed to prevent a repeal or modification of this
act at any time hereafter.
