money or tobacco by this act directed or inflicted, whereby
the plaintiff's action accrued to him, according to the form of
this act of assembly, without setting forth the special matter ;
Provided, a short note, expressing the cause of action, be lodged
in the office at the time of issuing the writ.

Sec. to aid
trustees.

SEC. 24. And be it further enacted, That all sheriffs, bailiffs,
constables, and all other officers and ministers of justice, shall
be aiding and assisting to the said trustees for the poor in the
said county, and to all such officers as shall be employed by
them, as by this act is directed, in the execution and perform-
ance of the said service.

General
issue plead-
able.

SEC. 25. And be it further enacted, That if any person or
persons shall, at any time or times, be sued or prosecuted for
any matter or thing by him or them done and executed in pur-
suance and execution of this act, or of any matter or thing in
this act contained, such person or persons shall and may plead
the general issue, and give this act and the special matter in
evidence for his or their defence; and if upon trial a verdict
shall pass for the defendant or defendants, or if the plaintiff or
plaintiffs shall become non-suited, or discontinue his or their suit,
then such defendant or defendants shall have and recover treble
costs to him or them awarded against such plaintiff or plaintiffs,
and if the plaintiff or plaintiffs is or are unable to satisfy the
same, then it shall be paid and satisfied by the attorney who
brought such suit, unless the plaintiff or plaintiffs shall give
security for the costs, to be approved of by the county court.

Trustee
may order
correction.

SEC. 27. And be it further enacted, That in all cases, upon
complaint of the overseer of said work-house, to any trustee for
the poor of such work-house, that any rogue, vagrant, vaga-
bond, or other idle, dissolute and disorderly person thereto
committed, and therein remaining, hath behaved and demeaned
himself in a disorderly manner, or hath neglected and refused
to do and perform his or her daily labour and task, or hath
neglected or refused to obey, keep and observe, any of the
ordinances, rules and by-laws, of the said corporation, it shall
and may be lawful for such trustee to order and direct such
moderate and proper correction, not exceeding thirty-nine
lashes for any one offence, to be given to any such offender,
as the nature of the case shall require.
The other sections of this act are merged in the following acts relating
to the poor.
1805, ch. 34, authorizes a lease of a part of the grounds belonging to
the Poor-house.
1805, ch. 95, transfers the control over the fiscal concerns of the Poor-
house to the Levy Court.
1807, ch. 46, and 1811, ch.111, authorizes an exchange of a lot.
1816, ch. 201, authorizes the sale of the lands of the Poor- house, and the
purchase of other grounds.
