Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the following taxes* be levied in the town and upon the inhabi-
tants of Baltimore town, towards paving, cleansing, and keep-
ing in repair, the streets, lanes and alleys, and for mending,
building and keeping in repair the bridges within the said town,
viz : On every foot front of improved and unimproved lots
in those parts of the streets fixed on to be paved, or that may
have been already paved, by the special commissioners ap-
pointed by an act,f entitled, an act for the speedy application
of the money appropriated for repairing the streets in Balti-
more totvn, in Baltimore county; that is to say, twelve shillings
and six-pence; and on every foot front of improved and unim-
proved lots in those parts of the lanes and alleys paved or to be
paved, six shillings and three-pence; on every four-wheeled
riding carriage, thirty shillings per year; chairs or sulkeys,
fifteen shillings per year; drays, twenty-five shillings per year;
wagons and carts, twenty-five shillings per year; riding horses,
twenty shillings per year; an additional tax upon billiard tables,
fifteen pounds per year; a tax upon the play-house of fifty
pounds per year ; an additional tax of thirty shillings on every
chimney catching fire ;|| on persons convicted in the county
court of selling liquors without license an additional fine of
thirty shillings ; an additional tax of five pounds annually on
tavern licenses ; a tax, not exceeding two shillings and six-
pence, on every hundred pounds of assessed property within
said town.
The parts of this section printed in italic, were repealed by 1791, eh. 59,
sec. 3d, and by the 2d section of that act other taxes are imposed.
* By November, 1792, ch. 21, the taxes are to be recovered by distress and
sale, and a remedy is given to persons aggrieved thereby,
t April, 1782, ch. 39.
t The part of this act imposing a tax of fifty pounds on theatrical exhibi-
tions was repealed by 1791, ch. 59, by which a license was to be applied
for and to be paid for at the same rate ; and the power of licensing, &c. as to
theatrical and other public amusements, is now vested in the corporation.
