BALTIMORE CITY.
master appointing said deputies, shall be responsible for their
acts, in the same manner as he would be, if done or committed
by himself; and the said weigh-master, appointed under the
authority of this act, shall be entitled to receive the sum annu-
ally, of fifteen hundred dollars, in lieu of all other compensa-
tion, until otherwise provided by law ; and the treasurer of the
western shore is hereby authorized and required to pay the said
amount annually, out of the proceeds arising from the office of
weigh-master, and the surplus of proceeds, if any, after paying
said weigh-master, shall be set apart and invested by said trea-
surer as a sinking fund, to redeem the principal and interest of
any debt which may have been created in pursuance of the pro-
visions of the first and second sections of this act.
SEC.10. And be it enacted, That if any grazier, drover, or
other person, shall sell or barter any beef, cattle, or hogs, brought
for slaughter within the corporate limits of the city of Baltimore,
or within five miles of said limits, which have not been raised
or grazed one year within said limits, or within five miles of the
same, and which have not been weighed according to law, after
said weigh-master shall have qualified, by complying with the
conditions herein stated, upon proof, and conviction thereof,
before any judge or justice of the peace, he or they shall forfeit
and pay a sum of not less than one, nor more than ten dollars,
for each and every head of cattle, or hogs, so sold or bartered, at
the discretion of said judge or justice, recoverable with costs,
in the name of the state, in an action of debt in the manner
aforesaid, one-half of said forfeiture to be paid to the informer,
and the other half to the clerk of Baltimore county court, for the
use of the state, to be accounted for by him every six months,
to the treasurer of the western shore, after receiving the usual
allowance for collecting and paying said forfeitures to the
treasurer.
SEC. 11. And be it be enacted. That the money to be ex-
pended under the provisions of this act, shall not exceed five
thousand dollars*

AN ACT to regulate the Inspection of Lumber.— 1811, ch. 70.
SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the
council, shall, immediately on the passage of this act, and in
every year thereafter, appoint four or more inspectors of lumber
for the city and county of Baltimore, and as many more in other
parts of this state as may from time to time be necessary.
Ssc. 2. And be it enacted, That the said inspectors hereafter
to be appointed, before they enter upon the execution of their
