to lay and collect a direct tax, not exceeding thirty-five cents

 

in the hundred dollars on the assessment of all lands and

 

houses in the said city, lying without the present limits of

 

direct taxation, and within the exterior limits of said city, and

 

may enforce the payment of the same in the same manner as

 

is now provided with respect to the direct taxes which the said

 

corporation is now authorized to impose; and the tenants in

 

possession shall be liable to the payment of the said tax im-

 

posed upon the premises occupied by them, without its operat-

 

ing, however, to alter the nature of contracts between landlords

 

and tenants.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the taxes thus levied, after

of Baltimore.— 1827, ch. 87.

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,

That hereafter the mayor and city council of Baltimore shall

 

have power to lay and collect a direct tax, not exceeding fifty

 

cents in the hundred dollars, on the assessment of all lands and

 

houses in the said city, lying without the present limits of direct

 

taxation, and within the exterior limits of said city, for the pur-

 

poses, and to be applied in the manner as prescribed in an act

 

passed at December session, eighteen hundred and twenty-

 

three, chapter one hundred and eighty-five, entitled, an act to

 

repair the highways and bridges in certain parts of the city of

 

Baltimore, any thing in said act contained to the contrary not-

 

withstanding.
