CHAPTER 265.

Air ACT to provide for the Cession of the Territorial Jurisdiction of this
State, over certain land on Piney Point, in St. Mary's County, to the
United States, for the erection of a Light-house thereon.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it is believed that the convenience of the citizens
of this state, and others navigating the Potomac river, would
be greatly promoted, and their interest and property better
protected, by the erection of a light-house on Piney point, in
St. Mary's county ; And whereas, application has been made to
the congress of the United States for an appropriation of money
for that purpose ; therefore,
SEC. 1, 3, 4, 5, 6. Are directory to the commissioners appointed therein,
assess the compensations and provide for the recording of their proceedings.

Title and
jurisdiction.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the United States, upon the
payment, or offer of payment, to the proprietor or proprietors, of
the amount or value which may be ascertained and assessed by
the said commissioners, or by the appellate tribunal herein
after provided for, (as the case may be,) shall thenceforward be
considered the true and lawful owners of the said land, and of
the right and privilege of a way thereto ; and thereupon the
right of jurisdiction of the state of Maryland, in and over the
land aforesaid, shall be and the same is hereby relinquished,
ceded and made over to the United States for the purposes
aforesaid.

AN additional SUPPLEMENT to an ACT* to regulate the issuing of Licenses
to Traders, Keepers of Ordinaries, and others.
See 1829, ch. 217, ante page 994.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it is understood that the act, entitled, an act to
regulate the issuing of licenses to traders, keepers of ordinaries,
and others, has been so construed as to extend to the keepers of
victualling houses, cook shops or oyster houses, all the privi-
leges, rights and powers of keepers of ordinaries, taverns or
public inns, contrary to the manifest intention and meaning of
the law, and to the great injury of the public revenue: for
remedy thereof, by more notable discrimination,

Licence
defined.

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
from and after the thirtieth day of April next, license to keep a
victualling house, cook shop or oyster house, shall not autho-
rize or be construed to authorize the vending, bartering, fur-
nishing or permitting the use therein of spirituous liquors, in
any manner or quantity whatsoever, nor the keeping of an ordi-
nary tavern or public inn.
