* Hired for season only.
The Conservation Department has charge of all the natural re-
sources of the State, namely, oysters, fish, crabs, clams, terrapin, wild
fowl, birds, game and fur-bearing animals.
The staff officers and State Game Warden, clerical force, Deputy
Commanders of State Fishery Force and Inspectors are appointed by
the Department. Deputy Game Wardens are recommended by the
State Game Warden and appointments are confirmed by the Department.
The Conservation Department is for the first time nearly self-sup-
porting, and with an average catch of oysters it would become entirely
independent of legislative appropriations. The output for the present
season has not yielded any more than last year, but the quality of
oysters has been far superior. The mussels in many districts have dis-
appeared and the oysters are fat and very palatable.
Last season was a banner season in the crab industry. The output
far exceeded any for a long period of years.
