1867.] OF THE SENATE. 815

substituted by a fresh token of our grief over the remains of
another deceased associate. Let us thoughtfully pause by the
recent graves of Magraw and Hutton. How suddenly were
their active lives shrouded in eclipse ! How brief was the
premonition of their summons from the field of their earthly
labors ! It is fitting while we bear with us from these halls
the memory of their many public virtues and cherish in our
hearts the recollection of their private worth, that we should
appropriate the solemn teachings which their sudden depar-
ture inspires. Their resting places point the lesson of our
frail mortality and warn us to be also ready.

Here I close, Senators, leaving with you my most ardent
wishes for a safe return to your firesides, and invoking health,
happiness, and prosperity upon the paths of each and every
one of you and of those who constitute your home circles.

The President declared the Senate adjourned sine die.

Attest:

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,

Secretary.
