REPORT.

STATE OF MARYLAND.

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION,

Superintendent's Office,

BALTIMORE, March 4, 1867.

To the Honorable, Oliver Miller,

Speaker of the House of

Delegates of Maryland:
SIR:

By an order of the House of Delegates, February 20, 1867,
received at this office February 26, the State Superintendent
of Public Instruction is required to report,

1st. What Books are used in the Public Schools of the
State, where published, from whom purchased, what number
were purchased in the years 1865 and 1866, and what sum
has been paid for said books.

2d. How many have been distributed to the County Schpol
Commissioners, of each county. .

3d. How many have been disposed of by paid Commis-
sioners, and what number now remain on hand.

4th. Whether books were purchased under published pro-
posals or private contract, the invoice price paid per copy
and receivcd for same from scholars.

5th. Whether there was a discount upon the invoice price.
and if so, the amount of said discount.

The information asked is herewith respectfully subimitted:

1. Appendix "No, 1," being acircular issued to the several
Boards of School Commissioners upon the adoption of, the,
uniform series of Text Books, shows the Text Books used,
where published, and from whom purchased.

The number of volumes purchased in 1865 and 1860, was
196,228—the total cost of which, including all expenses of
freight, storage, boxing, clerk hire and transportation to the
counties, was $64,103 82.

2. Appendix "No. 2," shows how many books of each kind
were distributed to each Board of County School Commission-
ers. The total cost of these books being $64,103 82, and the
total number of different pupils enrolled 64,793, places the
