Mr. Gorsuch proposed the following amendment:
Section 4, line 8, strike out all after the word "direct,"
and insert "a sum not exceeding eight .hundred dollars per
annum, at the discretion of the Board of School Commission-
ers."

Mr. Jones, chairman of the Select Committee, submitted
the following
REPORT:
The Special Committee on the subject of the dividing line
of the States of Maryland and Virginia, on the Eastern Shore
of the Chesapeake Bay, respectfully report, that in pursuance
of the power conferred upon them by the order of the House
appointing the Committee, they summoned before them Sam-
uel K. Dennis, Esq., of Worcester county, Maryland, and
John Brittingham, Esq., of Accomac county, Virginia,
and examined them on oath as to their knowledge of said
line.
Mr. Dennis resides on a farm lying on the Pocomoke River,
which is reputed to be divided by the said line, a part of it
being assessed in Worcester county, Maryland, and another
part in Accomac county, Virginia.
Mr. Dennis testified that there is no mark or tradition
known to him, or, so far as he knows, to any living person,
showing where, upon the east shore of the Pocomoke river,
the said dividing line begins; nor does he know of any such
