BALTIMORE FEMALE COLLEGE.
By the fourth annual report of this institution, and a per-
sonal examination, your committee are pleased to report it
in successful operation under the Presidency of Nathan C.
Brooks, LL.D., aided by an able and energetic Faculty, and
has achieved a justly enviable reputation. It now numbers
one hundred and twenty pupils, of which the State avails
itself of the twenty-two free scholarships it established, at
the cost of only sixty-eight dollars each. "At this trifling
expense to the State an able body of teachers is thus being
reared up, whose efficient service in the cause of education
will more than compensate the State for the money expended
upon their training."
We cheerfully suggest that the annual appropriation of
$1,500 be continued.
ST. VINCENT'S INFANT ASYLUM.
This charitable institution is, as its name denotes, intended
to provide a Home for abandoned and destitute infants, and
since its establishment in 1856 has thus provided for 560
children.
Of this number many are fondlings, exposed by inhuman
persons to die, OP be picked up by those who will care for
them. When the male children thus picked up arrive at the
age of 5 years, they are sent to St. Vincent's Orphan Asy-
lum, and the female children to St. Mary's Orphan Asylum,
