nel of the First Artillery, and assigned quarters and furnished
with new Door-keepers and Pages. Our Sergeant-at-Arms
was John L. Buell, Second Lieutenant Fourth Infantry, U.
S. A., here we were kept in open session until the 26th of
November, when I was invited to return home.

I presumed the object of this was for me to attend an ex-
traordinary session called by the third proclamation of Gov-
ernor Hicks, to convene at Annapolis, on the third day of
December, 1861, which session I attended. What object
those who were instrumental in sending me off, as before
named, had, I have never been informed of; but as it has al-
ways been customary to pay the members of the Legislature
four dollars per day and mileage, and when sent off ,on trav-
elling committees within this State, they were generally paid
extra. And whereas, I was placed on this committee with-
out any solicitation or movement on my part; I therefore pray
your Honorable Body to consider my case and appropriate and
order so much to be paid me as in your judgement you think
I ought to have, and I as in duty bound will ever pray.
I remain respectfully your obedient servant,

J. J. HECKART,

Port Deposit,
Cecil county, Md.
