and said as follows :

By Mr. Spates.

Question. What is your name, age, occupation and resi-
dence, and how long have you lived there ?

Answer. My name is George H. O'Brien; age 30 years; oc-
cupation farming, and reside in District No. 1, in Allegany
county, Maryland, and have lived there five years.

By Mr. Spates :

Question. Where you registered as a voter prior to the
election held in said county, on the 6th of November, 1866 ?

Answer. I was.

By Mr. Spat,es :

Question. Did you or not attend at the polls in said elect-
tion District, in Allegany county, on the 6th day of Novem-
ber, 1866; it so, did you then and there offer a ticket to the
Judges of election at said polls as your ballot, and was it re-
ceived or rejected ? state also the name of the person printed
on said ticket for State Senator, for whom you desired to vote,
and what reason did the said Judges assign for rejecting you?
vote, if they did so reject it ?

Answer. I attended at the polls in my District on that day
and offered my ballot to the Judges, and they all refused to
take it and allow me to vote; the name of Alfred Spates for
States Senator, 'was on the ticket I had and offered to the
Judges when I wanted to vote that day; the reasons assigned
by the Judges for refusing my vote was that Mr. Friend,
one of the Judges, said I had given a horse to Mr. West to
go South, which I now say 1 did not do; I offered my vote to
all of them and each of them refused it. Another reason as-
signed by the JudgeSj was that I had given Charley West
and Hiram Taskar, something to eat after they had been
South.
