90 MARYLAND MANUAL.

UNITS IN SERVICE FROM MARYLAND.

While the Maryland men who went into the military service were
chiefly identified with the 115th and 313th Regiments, the former a
part of the 29th or "Blue and Gray" division, and the latter
with the "Liberty" division, there were a large number from the
State who were scattered in other divisions and in other branches of
the service. This is notably true of the 117th Trench Mortar Battery,
known as Maryland's "first to fight," which became a part of the
famous "Rainbow" division, and aided materially in making that
division's fighting reputation.

The 117th Trench Mortar Battery was formed from the third and
fourth Maryland Coast Artillery Corps in August, 1917, and went
overseas in October of the same year under command of Capt. Robert
J. Gill, who was later promoted to be lieutenant colonel. Other com-
manders were Capt. Richard Carson, Lieut. J. Woodall Green and
Capt. Lee V. McCabe. The Battery entered the treaches on February
27, 1918, and served with distinction in a number of important en-
gagements, and at the signing of the armistice was at the front near
Sedan, returning to the' United States in April, 1919.

115th Regiment.

The 115th Regiment was formed of the Maryland National Guard,
and was sent to Camp McClellan, at Anniston, Alabama, in August
1917, for preliminary training becoming a part of the 29th division.
In the spring of 1918 Col. Frank B. Watson was succeeded in com-
mand by Col. Milton A. Reckord, the regiment sailing for France in
June, and entering the front line trenches on July 27, 1918. Took part
in the Meuse-Argonne, beginning September 26, and continued to ad-
vance until relieved on October 28. Returned to the United States in
May, 1919.
313th Regiment.

The 313th Regiment was formed and trained at Camp Meade, Md.
as a part of 70th or "Liberty" division, under command of Col.
Claude B. Sweezey. It sailed for France in July, 1918; went into the
front lines September 16, 1918, and participated in the first phase of
the Meuse-Argonne offensive, beginning September 26, 1918, at Mant-
is faucon, on the last day of the war, November 11, 1918, captured Hill
319. Returned to the United States in May, 1919.

Battery F, 58th C. A. C.

Formed at Fort Howard in December, 1917, from Maryland Coast
Artillery, under command of Capt. Rudolph Ritterbusch. Later it
was under command of Capt. J. C. Hawkins, who waa still at the head
of the Battery when it sailed for France in May, 1918. The front line
was entered on October 26, 1918, at Pont-a-Mousson, and was at Boia
Le Pretre at the signing of the armistice. Returned to the United
States in May, 1919.
