lumber business as a partner in the firm of E. E. Jackson &
Co., Salisbury, Maryland, on the dissolution of this firm, he
and his father organized the present firm of Jackson Brothers
Co., of which he is now president and active manager; he is
also president of the Salisbury National Bank, Jackson & Gut-
man Co., Salisbury Ice Co., Citizens Gas Co., and Peninsula
General Hospital; owns and operates a large dairy farm and
is extensively engaged in the breeding of registered Holstein-
Friesian cattle.

Mr. Jackson has been a member of the Republican National
Committee since 1908 and was a member of the United States
Senate from 1912 to 1914, having been appointed to fill the
vacancy caused by the death of Senator Isador Rayner; he
has been twice married, his first wife was Sallie McCoombs of
Havre de Grace, Md., whom he married in 1890, from this
union two children were born, Belle McCoombs Jackson and
William Newton Jackson, after the death of his first wife
he married Katherine Shelmerdine of Philadelphia and from
this union two children were born, William Humphreys Jack-
son and Elizabeth Shelmerdine Jackson.

At the 1918 session of the General Assembly of Maryland
Mr. Jackson was elected Treasurer of Maryland, succeeding
Mr. John M. Dennis and assumed the office during the month
of February, 1918.

Clerk of the Court of Appeals: CALEB C. MAGRUDER (Demo-
crat), of Prince George's County.

Caleb Clarke Magruder, of Prince George's County, son of
Caleb Magruder, lawyer, and Mary Sprigg Belt, was gradu-
ated A. B. and A. M., Georgetown University. Studied law
at the University of Virginia. Married Elizabeth Rice,
daughter of Dr. Richard Thomas Nalle and Ellen Anne Hooe,
of Virginia. Democratic candidate for State Senator from
Prince George's in 1881, and for Associate Judge of Seventh
Judicial Circuit in 1897. Elected Clerk of the Court of Ap-
peals November 5,1907.

At the election of 1913 Mr. Magruder was re-elected Clerk
of the Court of Appeals for a term of six years.
