six years from the first Monday in May next ensuing their appoint-
ment (Ch. 584, 1904). Two of the six appointed must be chosen
from the political party which at the last election for Governor re-
ceived next to the highest number of votes. Those six members, to-
gether with the Governor and the Superintendent of Public Educa-
tion, constitute the State Board of Education.

The Adjutant General is appointed by the Governor, with the con-
sent of the Senate, and holds office during the term of the Governor.
(Const., Art. 9, Sec. 2.)

The designation of an officer of the United States Army for duty
in connection with the State Militia, is made by the War Depart-
ment under an Act of Congress providing that any State having a
regularly organized militia conforming to the Act of Congress, may,
through Its Governor, request the designation. The Assistant Adju-
tant General and the Acting Quartermaster General are appointed
and commissioned by the Governor upon the recommendation of the
Adjutant General. (Ch. 103, 1908.) The Adjutant General makes
all other appointments.
