2 Important amendments to the Constitution, proposed at December session,
1836, ratified by this Assembly.

3 By Ch. 239 of the Acts of 1845, confirmed by Ch. 306, Acts of 1846, the Consti-
tution was amended so as to substitute biennial for annual sessions of the Legisla-
ture, beginning with 1847.

4 Ch. 246 of the Acts of 1849 provided for the calling of a Constitutional Conven-
tion, after submitting the question to the vote of the people in May, 1850. The
Convention met November 5th, 1850, and adjourned May 13th 1851, the new Consti-
tution becoming operative July 4th, 1851.

5 Sec. 7 of Art. 3 of the Constitution of 1851 provided for the meeting of the As-
sembly on the first Wednesday of January, 1852, 1853, 1854, and on the same day every
second year thereafter. From 1854 the sessions were limited to March 10th.

6 Extra session, byproclamation of Governor Hicks; sat from April 26th to May
14th; adjourned to June 4th; sat until June 25th: adjourned to July 30th; sat until
August 7th; adjourned to September 17th, but on this date no quorum was present,
as a majority of the Assembly had been put under arrest by the Federal Govern-
ment.

7 Special session called by Governor Hicks.

8 Ch. 6. Acts of 1864, provided for a Constitutional Convention, which met April
27th and adjourned September 6th. The new Constitution went into effect Novem-
ber Ist. The Assembly to meet on first. Wednesday of January, 1865, and every two
years thereafter. Compensation of members limited to four hundred dollars.

9Extra session called by Governor Swann to consider the finances of the State.

10 Ch. 327 of the Acts of 1867 provided for the Constitutional Convention which
met May 8th and adjourned August 17th. The Assembly was directed to meet on.
the first Wednesday of January, 1868, and every second year thereafter. Session
limited to 80 days.
