The following message was received form the Executive at
the hands of his private Secretary Peter Leary, Esq.
STATE OF MARYLAND
EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT,
Annapolis Jan. 18th, 1866.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:
I beg leave most respectfully to hand you herewith, certain
Documents relating to the Antietam National Cemetery, to-
gether with a communication from Messrs. Shriver and Ful-
ton, Trustees on the part of the State of Maryland.
These papers will show what has been done in carrying out
the law of the State in reference to that work. The object of
the State of Maryland, appears to have been to tax herself
with the purchase of the grounds in the preparation of the
Cemetery for the reception of the remains of the gallant men
not only from our own but from all the States, who fell in
that c inflict. It will be seen by the report of the trustees,
that a balance of some $8, 000 remains to be furnished in order
to make the work complete; when it is not doubted that our
; sister States will co-operate in such further contributions as
may lead to the prompt removal of their own dead to the place
