REPORT.
The committee on the Resources of Maryland, to whom
was referred the report and accompanying papers, of W. R.
Cole, Chief Clerk of this House, in relation to the distribu-
tion of the report of said committee, beg leave to report:
That the papers examined give satisfactory evidence of
the zeal and ability displayed by Mr. Cole, in fulfilling the
trust reposed in him, and of the beneficial results that have
already and are likely still further to follow the timely legis-
tation on the subject of Emigration. They find that a very
general interest has been awakened abroad in regard to this
State, which only requires a liberal encouragement to make
it largely conducive to our mutual prosperity. As steps have
already been taken in this direction, prompted by our wise
and able Executive, it is not deemed necessary to suggest
any further legislation on the subject.
Your committee also find from a statement of expenses
submitted, that Mr. Cole, has not only pursued this work
without adequate compensation, but has drawn largely upon
his personal resources for its accomplishment. Desiring, there-
fore, to afford him some acknowledgment of our appreciation
of his efforts, and reposing the fullest confidence in his abil-
ity and energy to give proper direction to the objects contem-
plated in the bill passed by your body, recommend the adop-
tion of the following resolution :
Resolved, That the thanks of this House are due, and are
hereby tendered to William R. Cole, for the efficient manner
in which he has labored to second the efforts of the General
Assembly, to encourage Emigration into this State.
JO8. HARRIS,
F. T. DARLING,
JAMES McCAULEY,
CHAS. B. CALVERT,
UPTON BUHRMAN.
