30 dren in six small sleeping apartments, which are situated partially under ground, and are very damp, badly lighted and ventilated. The effect of this has been seen in a marked deterioration of the health of these prisioneis, some of whom present undoubted evidences, of serious pulmonary disease; and unless provision can he made for the more comfortable accommodation of the females incarcerated, in the Peniten- tiary, I fear that the ratio of'mortality among them will be very largely increased. Two births and one death have occurred i: i the female de- partment during the year. Laura .fane Richardson, colored, aged 21 years, died Sep. 10, 1865, of consumption. Margaret Stewart, colored, received into this prison Oct. 31, 1864, gave birth to an infant which lived but a lew min- utes February 6, 1865. Maria Gross, colored, gave birth to a, daughter, Nov. 13, 1865, she was received here May 17, 1865, Respectfully submitted, J. W. HANK, M. D. |
