Nothing more than I have testified to; but that was the general talk in the neighborhood, that they didn't in- tend to register any except those who voted with them. (To this answer the Contestant objects.) 5th. A. Some sixty were excluded, and at least some one hun- dred deterred from applying for Registration because they didn't think it was of any use, from the conduct of the re- gisters, to apply; I have been much in the politics of this district, and am very familiar with every part of it. Cross-Examination: To the first cross-interrogatory: A. I have no recollection of making any remarks about it; I have been very cautious in making remarks during the whole war. 2d. A. I felt sorry that Fort Sumtcr was fired on by the rebels, because I wanted more time for a settlement, and I was op- posed to the war from the beginning to the end. 3d, 4th and 5th. Waived. 6th. A. I had sympathies for persons on both sides, but I did not desire the entire overthrow of the Government; I mean I wanted a restoration of the Union. The above has been read to me and is correct. WM.
