A. I don't remember what he said; but what he did say
satisfied the board that he was disloyal.
23d. How did he afterwards satisfy the board of his loy-
alty so as to be registered as a qualified voter?
A. By satisfying the board that he misunderstood their
questions.
24th. Wm. D. Lankford was was first entered disloyal by
public repute; how did he satisfy the board, that he way.
loyal ?
A. I think it was by testimony; I don't remember, but I
think it was upon the testimony of John W. Connor.
25th. John T. B. Ward and Stephen II. Whitington were
be til disloyal by public report and afterwards were put in the
eight column as qualified voters on what proof?
A. I think it was on the testimony of George T. Wilson,
"but I can't remember now -what his testimony was.
26th. Did you receive applications for registration, and take
oaths of applicants after the days of your last published meet-
ing by law before review?
A. I thiink not.
27th. Did you receive application and make entries of quali-
fied or disqualified, on the days of review?
A. I think not.
28th. When did you finally close your books?
A. It was on last day of meeting for registration.
29th. Did you notify all applicants for registration when
there,were charges against them by public reput'e or otherwise
by the testimony (if witnesses, and give them an opportunity
to be confronted with the evidence against them, or did you
leave them to find out as best they could, whether there were
any such charges?
A. To the best of my recollection we summoned them to
appear before us on the days we finished, I mean the days of
review.
31st. Did/you summon all whom you had disqualified by
public repute or only such as had witnesses against them. or
whom you supposed you might have ground to change.
A. We summoned all to appear with their witnesses, with,
the exception of those that we (the Board) were otherwise
satisfied.
32d. When you say you summoned them to appear with
their witnesses, don't you mean with loyal vouchers, for their
loyalty ?
A. Not prepared to answer that, question.
