However, the amendment before us does not include
that language, because as a matter of procedure of this
Convention, we may not now vote upon the issue of whether
the attorney general is elected or appointed.

It seems to me we are in a type of "Alice in ;
Wonderland" situation where we are going to debate whether
the attorney general should be elected or appointed, and
then are going to vote not on that issue, but on whether it
is a constitutional office or not. I think they are very separate issues. I per-
sonally do believe that the attorney general is a constitu- '
tional office, that it should be included in the Constitu- i
tion. But once I know what are the duties of the attorney
general, what is to be his relationship to the executive,
to the legislative and to the judicial branches, then I would
be prepared to consider whether he should be an elected or
appointed official. I would request the Chair, before this debate
is concluded and the vote is taken on this issue, to advise
the Committee whether or not, despite the results of this
Committee and this vote, if it is decided that the attorney
