RABBI ADLER: Lord of the Universe, when we are
|
|
9
|
tired and do not wish to think, yet we must speak of that
|
|
10
|
association of men which we call government, we conjure up
|
|
11
|
an image as tired and hopeless as ourselves at that moment
|
|
12
|
of government as a ship of state. By so taking ship, we
|
|
13
|
hope to avoid the responsibility of thinking of what we
|
|
14
|
are doing, but we can do this no more than Jonah when he
|
|
15
|
took ship to avoid his responsibility for prophesying.
|
|
16
|
We, on a rhetorical ship, and he on his real one,
|
|
17
|
are both at sea on a ship of fools, for man in seeking to
|
|
18
|
avoid responsibility reaps only the whirlwind and his ship
|
|
19
|
sinks like a stone into the depths.

|
