1799. NOVEMBER LAWS OF
MARYLAND
At a SESSION of the GENERAL ASSEMBLY of MARYLAND,
begun and held at the CITY of ANNAPOLIS, on Monday, the
4th of November, in the year of our Lord 1799, and ended the
3d day of January, 1800, the following laws were enacted.

CHAP. 1.
An ACT to authorise and empower the levy court of Dorchester
county to assess and levy annually a sum of money for the support
of Esther Kenner. Lib. JG.-No. 3 fol. 245.
WHEREAS Esther Kenner, of Dorchester county, by her petition to this
general assembly, hath
set forth, that she is now advanced in the seventy-thir year of her
age, has been totally
blind from her youth, and was formerly allowed a pension from said
county, but since the poor house
law took place in said county she has been supported by the benevolence
of a few friends, but from
her increasing infirmity requires more assistance than they are able
to give, and prays an act may pass
to provide for her support out of the poor's house; and the facts stated
in said petition appearing to
be true, therefore,
II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
justices of the levy court of
Dorchester county shall be and are hereby directed and empowered, at
their levy court annually, so
long as they shall see cause, to assess and levy on the assessble property
of said county, a sum of
money, not exceeding thirty dollars, for the support and maintenance
of the said Esther Kenner, and
that the same be collected and paid annually by the collector of Dorchester
county to such person as the levy court of said county shall or may direct.
CHAP. II.
An ACT to settle and ascertain the salary of the members of the
council for the ensuing year. Lib. JG. No. 3. fol. 245.
BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That each memeber
of the council shall
be entitled to recive for the ensuing year the sum of two hundred pounds
current money
for his salary.
CHAP. III.
An ACT to authorise and empower the levy court of Dorchester
county to assess and levy annually a sum of money for the support
of Philemon Brooke. Lib. JG. No. 3. fol. 245.
WHEREAS Philemon Brooke, of Dorchester county, by his petition to this
general assembly hath set forth, that he is far advanced in life, having
had the misfortune to lose his eye-sight
when very young, and has no other dependence whereby to subsist but
on the benevolence of his
friends, and prays an act may pass to provide for his future maintenance
out of the poor-house; and
the facts stated in said petition appearing to be true, therefore,
II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the justices
of Dorchester county
shall be and they are hereby directed and empowered, at their levy
courts annually as long as they,
in their discretion, may think proper, to assess and levy on said county
a sum of money, not exceed-
ing thirty dollars, for the support and maintenance of the said Philemon
Brooke, and that the said
sum be collected and paid to the aforesaid Philemon Brooke by the collector
or collectors of Dor-
chester county, for the purposes aforesaid, agreeably to the order
of the levy court of said county.
