exceed five thousand dollars. Whenever they make a levy they
shall do so, item by item, specifying the department for which
the levy is made and the amount to be expended therein.

When taxes

158B. Taxes shall be due as soon as they are levied, and if
not paid on or before the first day of September of the year
in which they are levied shall bear interest from that date at
the rate of six per centum per annum, and at any time after
the first day of Februray next succeeding- the date of levy,
and not before, payment may be enforced by sale as herein
provided. On all taxes paid after the levy and before the

lows: If paid in May, five per cent; if paid in June, four
per cent.; if paid in July, three per cent., and if paid in
August, two per cent.

Compensation
of treasurer.

159. The said Treasurer shall receive as compensation for his
services under the provisions of this Act and any amendments
thereof an annual salary of four hundred and eighty dollars,
to be paid monthly, and such commission as may accrue under
this Act.

159A. Nothing in this Article shall be taken or understood
as impairing the duties and obligations of collectors of city
taxes heretofore appointed in regard to the levies now in their
hands for collection, but such collectors shall proceed to com-
plete such collections under the existing provisions of law as
fully as if this Act had not passed.

Registration
of voters.

163. The Clerk to the Council or his authorized deputy,
appointed by the Mayor, shall sit at the City Hall on the
first and second Saturday in December, in the year 1900,
between the hours of 9 o'clock A.M. and 3 o'clock P.M.,
and between the hours of 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock P.M., for the
purpose of making a new registration or lists of voters to be
used at subsequent elections; and on the first Saturday in
December in each year thereafter, between the hours above
named, he shall sit for the purpose of entering additional
names upon said lists, and it shall be the duty of said Clerk to
enter in alphabetical order upon a book provided for the purpose
the names of all persons appearing before him at the times
above specified, and requesting to be registered; provided, he
shall be satisfied by the oath of said person, or otherwise,
that he is a citizen of the United States, above the age of
twenty-one, and that he will have resided in said city for at
