the condition of municipal affairs. He shall have the power
of vetoing any ordinance, as hereinafter provided, and for
his services shall receive an annual salary of twenty dollars,
and no other fee or compensation whatever. In the event of
the absence or temporary disability of the Mayor, the chair-
man of the Council shall fulfill all the duties, and be invested
with all the authority of Mayor until his return.

ELECTION AND QUALIFICATION OF COMMON COUNCILMEN.

Sec. 170. There shall be elected, by ballot, five persons as
common Councilmen on the first Monday of April, 1900, and
upon the same day, in every alternate year thereafter, polls'
to open at three P.M. and close at six P.M. The qualifica-
tions of the voters for Councilmen shall be the same as for
Mayor; the said Councilmen shall be twenty-five years of
age, citizens of the United States, residents of Union Bridge
for five years next preceding the election, and shall take the
oath of office as hereinafter prescribed for town officers, and shall
each hold the office to which he has been elected for two years
from the third Monday in April next ensuing- his election, or
until his successor shall be elected and qualified; they shall
receive an annual salary of ten dollars each, and no other fee
or compensation whatever. All members of the council shall
actually be possessed of and assessed for, on the books of said
town, real or personal property to the amount in value of five
hundred dollars at the time of their election.

Sec. 171. The Mayor and Council shall cause to be main-
tained a registration of the legal voters of the town, such
registration to be obtained from the registers' books oi the
district of which said town of Union Bridge is a part, and
said list to be changed, attend and added to at each sitting of
the registers of the district appointed by the Governor and
corrected in the manner provided in the general registration
law of the State; such registration shall be essential to the
right of voting at any election under this charter; provided,
however, that all non-resident male adults who hold real
estate in said town to the value of five hundred dollars or
more shall be entitled to vote, and should be duly entered on
the registration list, such information to be secured from the
city clerk; said registration book of the town is to be kept in
the custody of the city clerk until the judges of election have
duly qualified, when they are responsible for its safe keeping
until it is returned to the proper authority, which must be
done within twenty-four hours after the close of the polls.
