who, on good cause shown, may make any alterations in said
assessment which they may think proper and right, and all
persons interested may inspect free of charge the books of
assessment; provided, that the assessed value of any person's
property that does not exceed two hundred dollars shall be
exempt from taxation.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted. That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage .

CHAPTER 164.
AN ACT to add four additional sections to Article 4 of the
Public Local Laws, entitled "City of Baltimore," sub-title
"Miscellaneous Laws," as the same was enacted by Chap-
ter one hundred and twenty-three of the Acts of eighteen
hundred and ninety-eight, to follow Section 604, and be
designated as Sections 604 A, 604B, 604C, 604D, respectively,
providing for a Clerk to the Grand Juries of said city,
defining his duties and imposing a penalty for the violation
thereof.

Local Laws.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the four following sections be and they are hereby
added to Article 4 of the Public Local Laws, entitled "City
of Baltimore," sub-title "Miscellaneous Local Laws," as the
same was enacted by Chapter one hundred and twenty-three
of the Acts of eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, to follow
Section 604, and be designated as 604A, 604B, 604C and
604D, respectively, and to read as follows:

may appoint
Stenographer.

604A. Upon the organization of each grand jury, as pro-
vided for in the preceding section, and upon their request
therefore, signified to the judge or judges for the time being
especially assigned to and sitting in the Criminal Court of
the said city, the said judge or judges may, and they are
hereby authorized and empowered, to appoint a clerk who
shall be a competent stenographer, at a compensation not ex-
ceeding the rate of fifteen hundred dollars per annum, to be
paid by the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, which said
clerk shall have authority to take and transcribe the testi-
mony given before any grand jury in said City of Baltimore,
and whenever required by the State's attorney shall attend
upon and take and transcribe the testimony given at coroners'
