196 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 1 greed, bathed in the blood of slaughtered freemen; now, there fore, Be it resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland' that in the name and honor, humanity and liberty, we protest against the conduct of Her Brittanic Majesty's Government in its action towards the Boer Republics of South Africa; and be it further Resolved, That we would impress upon Her Majesty's Government the words of the greatest of Americans, the illustrious Washington, that "No nation is justified in laying hold of slight causes of umbrage, or to be in- tractable when accidental or trifling occasions of dispute occur," but that good faith, religion and morality should influence the mighty British nation, guided by exalted jus- tice and Christian benevolence, to give to the nations of the earth the magnanimous example of retiring from the frontiers of the Boer Republics. And be it further resolved, That the General Assem- bly would consider itself unworthy to sit in the historic building hallowed by the presence of the Spirit of the Father of His Country, who was and is to us "First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of His Countrymen," without giving expression of our sympathy for the heroic peoples of South Africa, now battling for the principles which Washington established on this Continent. Which was read the first time, and referred to the Committee on Federal Relations. At 1.30 P.M., On motion of Mr. Crothers, The Senate took a recess until 8 P. M. |
