called to the chair for the purpose of temporary organi-
zation.

Mr. Hanson, " of Howard county, Mr. Collins, of Talbot
county, conducted the speaker pro tem, to the chair.

Mr. Wolfe, of Howard county, nominated Hon.
Lloyd Wilkinson, of Worcester county, for Speaker, and
Mr. Briggs, of Washington county, nominated Hon.
James De B. Walbach, of Charles county.

On motion of Mr. Buckey, of Frederick county,
nominations were closed.

Mr. Walters, of Frederick county, and Mr. Krems, of
Anne Arundel county, were appointed as tellers.

The House then proceeded to vote for Speaker.

Upon counting the ballots it was found that Hon.
Lloyd Wilkinson had received 64 votes and Hon. James
De B. Walbach 26 votes.

Whereupon,

The Speaker pro tem. declared that the Hon. Lloyd
Wilkinson had received a majority of all the votes cast,
and was therefore duly elected Speaker of the House of
Delegates.

The Speaker pro tem. appointed Mr. Lehmayer, of Bal-
timore city, and Mr. De B. Walbach, of Charles county,
to conduct the Speaker-elect to the chair.

The Speaker thereupon delivered the following

ADDRESS:

Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

I scarcely know how to clothe in fitting words my ap-
preciation of the honor you have conferred upon me.
All my life I have considered a seat in the House of
Delegates as conferring a great honor upon any man,
and when you add to that the distinction of presiding
over so able a body of representative citizens as those
composing the present membership of this House, I am
at a loss for words to express my appreciation of the
high honor.

While this distinguished honor carries with it a sense
