Maryland, entitled 'Elections, ' said section to follow sec-
tion 83, of said Article, to be designated 'Section 83 A. ' ",

Which was read a second time.

JOINT RESOLUTION.
Mr. Staley submitted the following

Joint Resolution of the General Assembly of Mary-
land to Congress in relation to the Equitable share of
this State in the public lands of the United States, for
the benefit of the Public Schools of Maryland,

Whereas, The public lands of the United States, the
common property of the Union, 600, 000, 000 acres still
remain unsold and undisposed of by Congress, and

Whereas, Congress has granted to twenty-seven States
since the year 1803, in round numbers 68, 000, 000 acres
of public land for common or Public Schools, and

Whereas, Congress has never granted to the State of
Maryland one acre of said public lands for the benefit of
her Public Schools; and

Whereas, it was chiefly because of the wisdom and
sagacity of Maryland statesmen that the public lands
were ceded to the Union by the several States that origi-
nally claimed them.

Therefore, be it resolved by the General Assembly of
Maryland, that the Senators and Representatives of the
State in Congress, be and they are hereby earnestly re-
quested to take such action as in their judgment will
lead to the passage of an Act granting to the State of
Maryland, for the use and benefit of the public schools,
a just proportion of the public lands belonging - to the
United States.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on
Education.
