938 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

enter World War II when Nazi Germany occupied half of Czechoslo-
vakia? Was it more just to wait until half of Europe was gobbled
up and better than half-a-million people slaughtered? It is unjust,
unfair and immoral to create an attitude that says there is nothing
worth dying for — because if this is true, then there is nothing worth
living for either.

The new orthodoxy has the capacity to come to terms with these
great and haunting issues of our time. Founded on enduring prin-
ciples of the past, drawing upon the knowledge of the present, Ameri-
cans can fulfill the promising hopes of the future. But it will not
come by destroying America's heritage of law and order. Progress
can only come through law and order. Nor will a better society evolve
from the capitulation to a collective guilty conscience. It can only
be forged through positive action by socially conscious individuals.

I believe the Greek Orthodox Youth of America as a group and
as individuals can make a tremendous contribution to America, and
I mean all America. You already have the strength and wisdom of
the new orthodoxy. You have the organization and the dedication
to put it to work.

"Go Forth" is your theme and "go forth" were the words used by
John F. Kennedy in his inaugural address when he said: "Let the
word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that
the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans — born
in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter
peace, proud of our ancient heritage — and unwilling to witness or
permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation
has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at
home and around the world. "

You are that new generation of Americans. Bear the torch of
leadership proudly and use it to light our world.
