NEWS CONFERENCE 923

(Shotguns in Fire Houses)

Q. Governor, do you have any thoughts on the announcement in
Baltimore County that fire stations are getting shotguns?

A. I think it's a good idea. I think the fire stations should have
protection, particularly since in some other areas when riots have
broken out there have been efforts to impede the firemen in putting
out the fires that have developed. I think they should have protection.

Q. Are you thinking this on a Statewide basis, I take it, Governor,
which would include Baltimore City?

A. Yes.

(Special Session — Resumed)

Q. Governor, is your reluctance to call a special session based in
any way on your desire to postpone legislative action on your vetoed
bills?

A. No, I don't think that the vetoed bills are as politically exciting
as those of the last session. Senate Bill 1 which was the veto that in-
curred the wrath of Senator Lee has been the subject of subsequent
discussions between the Senator and me and I am hopeful that the
work that is going on HOW in the staff and which will involve the
Senator will permit a compromise which will accommodate both our
points of view on that subject. I don't think there are any vetoes
that I am so concerned about that I would resist a special session just
to protect them, for the time being.

(Lindsay Visit)

Q. Governor, Mayor Lindsay of New York is going to be in Balti-
more on Monday. Do you intend to meet with him?

A. I didn't know he was going to be in Baltimore, Monday, but I
will be attending the National Governors' Conference in Cincinnati
and won't be in the City at that time, which, of course, is the reason
also that I won't be able to meet with Governor Reagan when he
comes in to meet with the delegates.

(Rockefeller)

Q. Is Governor Rockefeller going to come back to Baltimore next
Thursday or Friday?

A. There is an effort by the Rockefeller supporters to bring the
Governor back into Maryland for a social gathering similar to the
one that was held last night. And I'd be delighted to have such an
affair for him if he is able to accommodate it to his schedule.
