902 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

majority of this rather large council. So I would like to tell you
something about this knowledgeable and dedicated young man and
why I have asked him to assume this very heavy responsibility.

Dr. Solomon came to my office some three weeks ago for an ap-
pointment arranged by a mutual friend. Like so many other people
I have listened to in recent months, he had a few thoughts to express
on our health problems. I was prepared for a half-hour lecture on
what I was doing wrong, but instead found myself listening, fasci-
nated, for two solid hours while he outlined to me the State's health
problems as he saw them, his ideas on how to meet these problems,
his conviction that the life span of the individual can be markedly
increased through improved health services in the early years, and
how all of this can be accomplished within the State's financial means
and ability to pay. My instant and obvious reaction was: We've got
to put this young man to work!

I think you will be as impressed with him as I am, and that in the
chairmanship of this Council he will find a worthy challenge for his
energy, his enthusiasm, and his dedication to the field of medicine
and health.

Dr. Solomon is a native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, but has been a
resident of Baltimore and a member of our medical community since
1961. He is Associate Professor of Physiology and Assistant Professor
of Medicine at the University of Maryland, a member of the faculty
of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and is Assistant Chief of
Medicine at the Baltimore City Hospitals.

For two years he was with the National Institutes of Health, as-
sociated with both the Heart Institute and the Institute of Child
Health and Human Development. He currently is doing research in
the area of aging, metabolism and nutrition under a Career Develop-
ment Award from N. I. H.

The head of planning operations, for both the Jntra-Agency Com-
prehensive Health Planning Committee and for this Council, is Dr.
Eugene Guthrie, who will assume his State position soon, but who
was unable to be with us today. He will select a staff to work with
you. It is most important that the initial steps taken by the Advisory
Council and the staff be well coordinated.

Finally, let me thank all of you for the interest you have shown in
Maryland's health problems by agreeing to serve on this Advisory
Council and by attending this meeting.
