NEWS CONFERENCE 855

who were paying 3% before. Could this have been a matter of mis-
take or misjudgment in forming this?

A. No, I don't think so and I'll tell you why I don't think so.
The predictions of gross revenue have held up to be just about what
they were expected to be from the very earliest report of the Comp-
troller on September 9, 1967. Therefore if the gross revenue is up
to the point it should be, it's pretty hard to say that the tax as struc-
tured went awry in providing revenue. I think that the problem's
going to lie somewhere either in a miscalculation carried through
several reports of the local share or possibly in some mishandling or
misinterpretation of the refunds.

(Princess Anne)

Q. Governor, have you had any report yet from the committee you
appointed down in Princess Anne to look into that situation?

A. I have had a report from the man who is acting as the temporary
chairman that he would convene them as soon as possible, but J have
had no reports of the meeting. Of course, I have had reports from
Mr. Bresler who went down soon after the Princess Anne problem at
the college developed and I have had a very nice letter from the stu-
dent leader who is much encouraged by what is taking place and
seems to be satisfied that the little committee that we've appointed —
including students and people on the scene and my staff — will keep
them advised of what's going on. So everything seems to be going
along very well down in Princess Anne.

Q. Governor, getting back to the convention for a moment. Senator
Dirksen has said he doesn't see any need to have any platform hearings
in Miami and that he can write the platform on a portable typewriter
at his home in Leesburg. Do you as a member of the Platform Com-
mittee feel that he could be trusted that far to go ahead with a plat-
form?

A. Well, I want to clarify something that you have no way of know-
ing: I have decided not to go to serve as a member of the Platform
Committee because of the problems here in the State, particularly
the problem with the tax revenues and many other problems that we
have. I don't feel that I can take that extra two weeks that are
necessary if you're going to serve on the Platform Committee. With
regard to Senator Dirksen I am not sure, because Senator Dirksen
likes to pull the legs of the reporters occasionally, whether he said
