NEWS CONFERENCE 851

and for the citizens who created them and the citizens who died de-
fending them.

Let us give National Flag Week real meaning by rededicating our-
selves to the principles for which it stands, "One nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. "

NEWS CONFERENCE

Questions and Answers
(Rockefeller Campaign)

Q. Governor, Governor Rockefeller is starting an intensive cam-
paign in newspaper advertising, radio, television commercials in hopes
of soliciting support from the people who were behind Senator Ken-
nedy before his assassination. Do you think that Governor Rockefeller
has a good chance of winning some of these people to his side?

A. Well, it's pretty hard to judge at this time. He has just begun
the tactic of attempting to woo over some of the Kennedy supporters.
I guess that we'll have to wait and see what the reaction to it is. The
news story this morning certainly indicated that he has been very
benign in his attitudes toward the opposite party, and I assume that
he's going to use the technique which has been very successful for
him in New York of attempting to prove his attractiveness to the in-
dependent and to the Democratic voter who may not wish to go
along with his own Party's selection.

(Meetings with Nixon)

Q. Governor, there has been a persistent rumor that you are going
to be or have been offered a Federal job if Mr. Nixon gets to be Presi-
dent. Is this true or not?

A. No. I haven't been offered any jobs, and my conversations with
Mr. Nixon have been related mainly to the issues and to his request
that I give him what benefit there is of my thinking on the problems
facing the country domestically. As a matter of fact he did send one
of his staff members down more than a month ago to discuss certain
problems related to welfare and the cities with me.
