NEWS CONFERENCE 829

indicated that they were not satisfied with the degree of speed, but I
think that realistically most of the students recognize that you can't do
the things that they ask in one day. Substantial progress has been al-
ready made. I talked with Mr. Jerome Wolff about the improvements
to the road. It involves some very knotty problems because some of the
road is on campus, some is off campus. The off-campus portions of
the road, which involve 2 1/2 miles on the east end and about four
tenths of a mile on the west end, will require a substitution in the
county program with the County Commissioners which I understand
is being worked out. They are favorable to doing that. The on-campus
portion of the road — we'll have to find the money for that, and
we're going to do it. Now I would say this, that improvements to that
road — the physical improvements — will begin in time to have the
road ready by the fall term at Princess Anne. This will involve a tre-
mendous speed-up — we're going to have to move awfully fast to do
it. It involves somewhere in the neighborhood of $350, 000 of total
expense, but there's no question about the fact that the road needs
to be improved. Now as to the portion of the road on campus, there's
been a request for lighting. We obviously can't light the whole road,
but I have indicated to Mr. Wolff that I want to see lights installed
on that portion of the road where it actually moves in between the
college buildings where students do walk at night. So we are going
to follow through with that portion of our hope that we could help
in that respect. Although I have made no previous commitment I
think we can do that. The situation with regard to the local people —
I think you're going to find that we have involved the local people
in the Princess Anne area, and we are trying to get this problem solved
compatibly so that there will be an enduring solution, not just an
imposed restraint on the part of the State government. The bus sta-
tion problem is being resolved. I am hopeful that a meeting is taking
place today or tomorrow between the students and some of the local
people and from what Mr. Bresler reported, that's not going to be a
problem. The problem involving the public accommodations place,
I think the name of it was Tulles, is something that's being worked
on now. The Attorney General of the United States is involved in
this, and as you know by reason of the Federal law, by July this has
to become an integrated facility anyhow. I think this is going to be
solved. The situation involving the cross-burnings I find most repre-
hensible. I am upset by the fact that a small group of people are re-
acting to what I consider to be very restrained steps taken by the stu-
dents in such an inflammatory matter, and I have already assured the
