MARYLAND STATE COLLEGE STUDENTS 821

matters such as the bleachers that are being built on this year's budget
and the swimming pool that I had already, at that previous meeting
in February, committed for next year for this campus. And then, we
talked about problems in the community itself, and the desire of
these people — which is certainly not only understandable but is a
desire which I share — that there be a removal of discrimination in
Princess Anne and Somerset County. I think there are scattered in-
stances of discrimination throughout the county in public accommo-
dations, which we cannot tolerate and which we will take immediate
steps to rectify, hopefully with the complete cooperation of the in-
dividuals involved. But we are going to work on it. And I'm terribly
enthused about the method used to get this start; about Mr. Roton
Lee as an articulate spokesman for his community; and about the com-
mittee he brought which was courteous, considerate, extremely force-
ful and yet reserved and dynamic. It was a good meeting.

Q. What did you talk about, Governor?

A. We talked about fair employment. We talked about the bus ter-
minal problem and the accommodations. We talked about such things
as better communication with the college faculty, the future of Mary-
land State. We talked about housing and public improvements in the
community — and I know that that community is going to need all
the assistance it can get from the State, and we intend to offer that.

Q. Will this involve additional funds for the College this year?

A. No, not in this year's budget. We have no way to provide ad-
ditional funds. We did provide the funds that I indicated, and we
have commitments to the College for next year. But I want to empha-
size that the thing that made this meeting so exceptional was that
these students didn't come in with unreasonable demands and a heavy
hand. They came in with a legitimate desire and a very honest ob-
jective to achieve reforms that relate more to common human dignity
than the desire to be given handouts. I'm going to try to help them
all I can.

Q. Was there any discussion of the relationship between Maryland
State and the University of Maryland?

A. Yes, I told them in regard to that that we have already been dis-
cussing the idea that Maryland State College may relate more properly
to the State College System, that no decisions had been made but that
these discussions would go forward.

Q. Will there be any more demonstrations?
