796 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

Goldwater but Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., who finds America "like one
big company town with the bland leading the bland. " It is not
William Buckley but John Kenneth Galbraith who bemoans a sight-
less society which trudges toward a brave new world down the path
of least resistance.

Now the issue takes on a fascinating irony with frightening impli-
cations. It is not the critic but the creator who finds his work un-
worthy. It is not the OUTS trying to depose the INS but the INS
trying to find their way out that mocks the progress of two genera-
tions and sends tremors of doubt reverberating through the Great and
Hollow Society.

What good are revolutions if we are devoured by them? For how
long can mere innovation masquerade as substance? Has our nation's
talent for acquiring wealth left its people impoverished? Are we to
remain a nation of sheep led by Judas goats down the paths of decep-
tion and self-destruction? Can we believe we are winning the war
against communism in Vietnam or the war against poverty in Amer-
ica? The casualty count in Vietnam and the cities ablaze in America
brutally expose the myth of success.

Prosperity is not at an all time high when the value of the American
dollar is at an all time low. We do not enjoy the world's richest
standard of living when we tremble to travel the streets at night. We
cannot applaud America's record for good health and long life when
our nation's infant mortality rate is inexcusably high, when pollution
fouls our waters and contaminates our air. These are the facts.

We are a people bereft of inspiration and adrift without policy. The
confidence of the American people that once could conquer a conti-
nent has been shaken to the core. We cower before the challenges we
must face, we cringe where once we would tower.

The country is in crisis. We face a foreign crisis, a domestic crisis
and a moral crisis. That's what the 1968 election will be all about.
And that's why the Republican Party confronts great obligations as
well as great opportunities.

The Republican Party offers the American people a choice — the
choice of strong, honest leadership. And when I speak of "strong"
leadership, I do not mean strong in the popularity polls but strong
on principle. When I speak of "honest" leadership, I speak of a leader
who has the courage to tell the public the truth. Now, as never before,
there is a great need for America's leaders to talk forthrightly and
frankly, to emphasize realism and not rhetoric.
