714 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

formation every day, to communicate through a central headquarters
and clearing house with each other so that they can be of mutual as-
sistance and have the comfort and the reinforcement of knowing that
they're not alone or acting completely unilaterally in their efforts. I
want to add that early next week I intend to have a meeting in Wash-
ington with the representatives from several Draft Rockefeller move-
ments throughout the country with several State leaders, and we will
have other meetings as the effort begins to roll. But I would think
that there will probably be representatives from as many as, oh I'd
guess 10 states, present at the meeting that we are going to have early
next week.

Q. Could you name the states, Governor?

A. I wouldn't want to name them now because we have no firm ac-
ceptances. We're still in the process of making the invitations and
some of the states may consider themselves better able to attend a
later meeting because they're just becoming functional.

Q. What type of people will man the headquarters here?

A. Well, we expect to have what we call party professionals, people
of the type that would be long active in political affairs, possibly the
type that might work on the Hill, that might work in particular or-
ganizations that have political orientation. In addition to that we
expect to have some people who are going to naturally become en-
thusiastic about Nelson Rockefeller's potential candidacy and who will
come into the headquarters and volunteer their services. I suppose a
lot of the local Republican ladies who traditionally work in volunteer
efforts will appear; I certainly hope they will. But the nucleus of the
staff will be the so-called professional political worker, and I don't
restrict them to people who will necessarily be here the entire time.
We may have someone come in from another state simply to work
three or four days here. It may be a constantly fluctuating staff.

Q. Governor, you met with Congressman Mac Mathias yesterday?
A. Yes.

Q. Was the purpose of your meeting to discuss the setting up of the
headquarters?

A. This headquarters? No. We met completely on the subject of the
Mathias senatorial campaign. Mac came in to tell me what he was
doing, how his effort was progressing and to ask my opinion on a
few matters that he was looking for some guidance in. There was
nothing said about this particular matter at that meeting.
