544 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

complaint in this area generated because of the advertising of a new
motel in the Annapolis area. The Economic Development Commission
has traditionally, in its effort to stimulate tourism, particularly in areas
where accommodations haven't been of the best, seen fit to distribute
any information that might attract tourists, make them feel they are
going to be more comfortable, better treated. When I say if it's taste-
fully handled, I mean that I think sometimes the writer can get carried
away to the extent that he may very well be arousing some wrath in
competitive private areas. So I think it's a matter of how the piece it-
self is handled. I do believe they should try to stimulate trade and tour-
ism all over the State, and I think this does mean that they should
publicize new facilities that are going to make it more comfortable for
people to visit. I think they should be very careful not to inferentially
downgrade or bypass other facilities operating in competition to the
new one that they happen to be announcing.

Q. Don't you think the actual facilities within the establishment
should be advertised by the agent, by the hotel itself?

A. It's not a black and white area. It's very much of a gray area.
Now, if we find that we're not able to attract tourists to Annapolis be-
cause they didn't have sufficient accommodations of the type that they
wanted, it becomes imperative for us to announce loudly and clearly
that we now have those accommodations. I think that some of these
pieces went a little too far, yes Tint I think that it was done in total
innocence in an effort to stimulate the State's economy and not to
prefer any private organization.

Q. Governor, does this compromise that the Convention reached last
night keep you from endorsing the new Constitution?

A. Oh no, it certainly could not under any circumstances do that.
The mere fact that I think they've sullied very slightly the absolute
purity of the result that they have been putting together so far, by
throwing in the detail that wouldn't have been there ordinarily,
wouldn't affect my support of the instrument. There is too much that's
too important in there. And as I pointed out when I sent the message
to the Convention last night, they have done an absolutely magnificent
job with the instrument so far and they have attracted favorable at-
tention all over the country. This Convention has been a model for
the entire nation.

Q. Governor, in turning to the national affairs for a moment, you are
a candidate for the platform committee for the Republican convention.
