454 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

director will need a Mayor who understands and values and empha-
sizes every facet of urban renewal and redevelopment.

Ladies and gentlemen, the State knows its obligation to the City,
as you know your obligation to our candidates. As Republicans, we
share pride and enthusiasm in our choice for Mayor and his running
mates, Horace Ashby and Howard C. Beck. Tonight, I hope, has
generated fresh resolve and renewed enthusiasm to sell the party of
principle to the people of Baltimore. Let us work together to promote
and perpetuate in City Hall the best of Republican leadership, that
which follows in the tradition of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roose-
velt, and Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin.

STATEMENT ON CHARGES BY CONGRESSMAN
CLARENCE LONG

October 3, 1967

In his desperate and futile efforts to block the construction of
needed toll facilities in Maryland, Congressman Clarence Long has
made many wild and reckless statements.

He has even seen fit, in recent days, to bring up the old chestnut
about my former ownership of some land near the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge as a reason why a parallel bridge should not be built, not-
withstanding the high priority assigned this structure by highway and
traffic professionals.

I thought this issue had been put to rest in the last gubernatorial
campaign, when I voluntarily disclosed that I had purchased land
in Anne Arundel County as an investment while I was Baltimore
County Executive. I also announced at that time that I was volun-
tarily disposing of any interest in this property since I was then a
candidate for Governor and I did not want any question to arise about
the propriety of my continuing to hold it.

In keeping with that pledge, and at a personal financial sacrifice, I
signed a deed September 16th, 1966, placing this property in irrevo-
cable trust, with any profits from its resale to be given to charity. The
property was taken out of my hands and placed with the Maryland
National Bank of Baltimore for disposal. As far as I know, the efforts
to sell it are continuing. Since September 16th, 1966, I have had no
financial interest in this property.
