304 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS
Q. If you were able to characterize what the Convention looks like,
would it be moderate, conservative, or what?
A. Balanced.
Q. Is that another word for liberal?
A. No, it simply means that there are enough conservatives to give
the liberals balance and enough liberals to give the conservatives
balance.
Q. Are you disappointed in the turnout?
A. No, I think the turnout was pretty good when you compare this
with any other election of this type. You have got to remember that
there's no cohesiveness caused when there is no statewide candidate.
It's difficult to generate interest where you have candidates running
only from districts.
Q. Governor, back to politics, Senator Daniel Brewster appears to be
running for reelection. He has all but announced. His divorce and
remarriage are being discussed in this statement. Would you give us
your assessment as to whether this factor will hurt the Senator or
whether it shouldn't?
A. That's one I could run from very easily, but I'm not going to. I
don't think it should have any effect at all on Senator Brewster's
chances of being reelected. I think his personal life, as long as it does
not include any activities that are morally reprehensible in the general
public's eyes, should not be a factor. His ability to be a good Senator,
his dedication to his work, they're the things the people should be
interested in. I think next to Mac Mathias, Rog Morton, Glenn Beall
and Gil Gude, he probably would be a fairly good Senator, after
them.
