288 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

Aged, senior citizens will have every opportunity to remain in the com-
munity or to reside in a beautiful, warm home surrounded by con-
temporaries who share similar desires to live and not just to exist.

A similar end through a different means will be provided by the
Jewish Community Center. In a time characterized by affluence and
social mobility, family unity is most seriously threatened. We cannot
deny that this has been an unfortunate and inescapable consequence
of our society's technological success. The Community Center has
evolved as a means to prevent this disruption, which can deteriorate
and corrode the minds of the young—as surely as isolation can affect
the minds of the old.

We are indoctrinated in the belief that a family which prays together
stays together. We can reinforce this principle if we accept the corol-
lary that a family which plays together, stays together. The Jewish
Community Center provides this opportunity through diversified rec-
reational programs directed toward stimulating the mind, as well as
strengthening the body. Through the development of a comprehensive
spectrum of physical, cultural and intellectual offerings it enables the
whole family to participate, each according to his interest, talent and
ability. In this way, togetherness can be an exhiliarating and not a
suffocating experience.

Finally, the Jewish Social Service Agency exists "to assist the reduced
fellowman"... whether reduced for financial or psychological or
physical misfortunes. Trained professionals will be available to re-
spond to individual needs through a host of services. In this way the
anguished adolescent will be prevented from becoming the emotionally
disturbed adult, potentially satisfying marriages will be prevented
from being disrupted by divorce, couples desperately desiring children
will be prevented from sharing a bitter and barren future while an
unwed mother will be far more able to reshape her future confident
that her child will be cherished in a happy home.

I believe that the Greater Washington Jewish Foundation Complex
will serve not only as a model but as an inspiration to all communities
throughout the nation. Not only because its architecture exemplifies
exquisite taste and because it is brilliantly planned to expedite access
between interrelated facilities, but because of the spirit in which it was
conceived and in which it will be maintained.

The spirit of initiative on the part of individual citizens. The
spirit of support by 90% of the community which contributed toward
its realization. The spirit of cooperation on the part of the County
