178 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS
As an individual, I am thrilled by the progress that has been made
to date. As a citizen, I am inspired by our nation's space program. And
as a Governor, I am dedicated to do all in my power to continue and
expand Maryland's participation in the effort.
Although I regard the exploration of space valuable and commend-
able in itself, I sincerely believe that the implications of our dis-
coveries in the conquest of space should have even more profound
significance in the development of new philosophy, which in turn
should stimulate and evolve new political, social and economic con-
cepts on earth. The culmination of this vast chain reaction, should be
a better way of life for all.
We stand at the threshold of a new horizon, much as did the nas-
cent Western European nations during the Renaissance. Only our
knowledge is more secure and our horizons virtually limitless. I ac-
cept this building for the State of Maryland. May I express the sincere
gratitude of the citizens of our State for the assistance of the Federal
government and commend the National Aeronautics and Space Ad-
ministration for the vital role which is has played in the construction
of this building. I have complete faith that efforts in the Space Sciences
Building will richly reward the confidence that brought this building
to the University of Maryland campus. Thank you.
REMARKS, ROTARY LADIES' NIGHT, CUMBERLAND*
April 26, 1967
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Last year you did a very wise thing. You had Abigail Van Buren as
your guest. As Dear Abby, she solves the problems of mankind. She
tells husbands how to get along with mothers-in-law. She tells mothers-
in-law how to get along with husbands. She tells you how to win a
raise from your boss at the office and when to take a night off from
your real boss. She lightens the burden of your mind, brightens the
spirit of your soul and heightens your feeling of self-esteem. I've got
to admit that she's a hard act to follow.
The Governor made a similar speech to the Maryland Division,
American Association of University Women, at Silver Spring on
May 5, 1967. - Ed.
